Organization

If you are in this group then you are someone who crafts beautiful to do lists but never gets anything done. Instead last minute rush and flying by the seat of your pants tends to be your MO. At times the thought of doing the same thing day in and day out makes you want to give up. You know you need routine but you do not like routine. You find it hard to use a planner, even one you designed so beautifully. Most days you just want to do what you want to do, when you want to do it.

What is happening to you is that you lack focus with your planning. There is never time to prioritize the most important tasks. Also you are not invested enough or invested in the right way to the outcome you are trying to achieve  Lack of focus comes when you are paying attention only to the effort it will take to complete a task rather than the great feeling you will have when the task is completed. Right now your motivation comes externally and while that is great to have someone pushing you, it won’t last. People get tired of having to continuously prop you up. You  have to have the internal motivation driven from yourself. Remember lack of focus becomes a habit. Lazy is also a habit. And even though you are probably a very driven person you will give yourself a hard time by calling yourself lazy. When you look at what you have achieved you will judge it harshly as not been good enough. Then berate yourself for not having made a better effort, set aside more time for the task, staying focused. All of which turn you off the jobs in front of you and your mind distracts you with “other” things that seem more interesting.

Your Lesson

  • If you have multiple to do lists combine them into one master list. Write the list out in order of priority. Start with the top priority. (No matter how boring it seems!)
  • Rather than plan your week, start by planning your day. Pick one task that will get done today. Keep your focus on that one task.
  •  Ask yourself “What will completing this task do for me?” answer for yourself, not your boss, your partner or family. What will it do for you? The answer might be as simple as get my boss off my back. If that gives you a feeling of relief, then the feeling to focus on is the relief that you will feel when you are no longer being called out by your boss. That feeling is the motivator you need to keep going.
  •  You need to set small achievable steps and congratulate yourself when you achieve them. Find ways to healthily celebrate your success. And success can be finishing a task!
  •  Catch yourself if you call yourself Lazy! You are not lazy you just get distracted easily. Reframe it in your mind as your creativity that needs to be channeled.
  • Boredom is your enemy. If the task is not engaging your mind will drift to the next thing. Keep an image of the completed task in your mind. People like you often find it useful to have an “Anchor” image or object that reminds them to focus and keep going.
